Michael (Mick) Symons is a specialist investigator with a background in policing and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in New South Wales. The majority of his service in the South Australia Police was in criminal investigation. He moved from a detective to the Officer-in-Charge of various areas including Organized Crime Investigation Branch, Drug Operations, Regional Detective Divisions, and the Major Crime Investigation Branch - MCIB. In the course of his duties with the MCIB, he had oversight of more than 50 active and cold case murder investigations. He was the nominated “Lead - Investigator” for terrorist-related incidents.

 

Mick was also the Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for eight years. The ACB investigated allegations of corruption across the Public Sector (including police). In the course of his duties with ACB, he had managerial oversight of more than 400 corruption-related investigations.

 

Mick then moved to the NSW ICAC where he held the position of Executive Director of the Investigation Division. He held this position for four years. During that time he had oversight of more than 300 preliminary and 50 major corruption-related investigations.

 

Mick is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a member of the Council of International Investigators (CII), Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional – International (CCEP-I) and Accredited Mediator (NMAS). In the course of his career as an investigator, he has been involved either as an investigator or managerial oversight of more than 3000 investigations.

 

In 2011, Mick formed the Anti-Corruption Consultants Australia (ACCA) which provides specialist investigation and consulting services to companies and government organizations across the world. He has provided consulting services to the Bangladesh Police (Police Integrity Unit), Serbian Anti-Corruption Agency, Indonesian Anti-Corruption Agency (KPK), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy, the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Working Group (APEC), the Office of Internal Oversight (OIOS) for the UN, the Bhutan Anti-Corruption Agency and the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission of Thailand (ONACC).

 

Program Summary

In this interactive and comprehensive 2-day executive program, you will be equipped with a well-rounded view on crucial issues of fraud, corruption, and bribery that will provide practical insights in combating it. This program will guide you in creating and implementing effective fraud prevention policy and procedures, as well as effective anti-bribery and anti-corruption program to prevent economic crime. In addition, you will master key techniques in conducting a corruption risk assessment that will help you identify corruption risk and ways to prevent it from damaging your organization. At the end of the 2-day program, you will be able to deploy an effective fraud investigation, a crucial step in cutting ties with the root of damaging fraud threats.

Introduction

Fraud, Bribery, and Corruption have been a severe issue around the globe. It has been consistently rated as the top four economic crimes based on the result from PwC’s 2016 Global Economic Crime Survey (GECS) and Australian organizations are predicting a higher likelihood of such economic crime to exacerbate over the next two years. While economic crimes continue to puzzle millions of organizations and cost trillions every year, it also leads to reputational damage, reduced employee morale, productivity and may suffer various other indirect harms. More than ever, a passive approach to detect and combat such economic crime is a sure recipe for economic crime.

 

Led by the program’s experienced faculty director, Mick Symons, a Certified Fraud Examiner who has overseen more than 700 corruption-related investigations, he will guide you guide you in creating and implementing effective fraud prevention policy and procedures, as well as effective anti-bribery and anti-corruption program to prevent economic crime.
