Program Summary

Do You Know How De Beers Has Successfully Used Blockchain Technology to Immutably and Securely Track Diamonds All the Way Along the Supply Chain?

The supply chain for diamonds is long and complicated. With information not shared across the entire network, there are often multiple versions of the same documents that must be reconciled. The likelihood of fraud is also high as the diamonds change hands many times along the supply chain. With blockchain, the supply chain gains an immutable and continuously updated record of transactions that is shared to all network participants, enabling the provenance of diamonds to be traced back to its origins.

Recently, De Beers successfully completed a blockchain pilot to immutably and securely tracked 100 high-value diamonds all the way along the value chain - from mine, to cutter, to polisher, and finally to jeweler. This marks the first time a diamond’s journey has been digitally tracked from mine to retail. By leveraging on the distributed ledger technology, De Beers will provide consumers with confidence that registered diamonds are both natural and conflict-free, while improving visibility and trust within the industry, in addition to enhancing efficiencies across the entire diamond value chain.
