MASTERCLASS A: Structuring Successful Green Bonds: From Establishing ESG Ratings to Acquiring Anchor Investors and Compliance Monitoring for New Bond Issues
09:00 – 12:00 Green bonds set a new annual high last year, with more than $140 billion issued globally. But with the waters around green financing as muddied as they are, tapping the rising demand for these bonds calls for a variety of measures to maintain investor trust and confidence. Successful green bond issuers must tailormake green bond frameworks incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings, implement strong compliance and reporting practices, secure anchor investors and more. Let Andrew de Souza, technical trainer at the Australian Financial Markets Association, guide you through all these in this exclusive masterclass.

International Case Study: How China Grew Its US$30 Billion Green Bond Market
China is one of the largest green bond market globally. This session will uncover how its regulators are
stepping in with attractive policies to encourage green bond issuance. The People’s Bank of China was the first central bank to accept green bonds as collateral when banks borrow from it. To encourage banks to use green finance, it also offers a discount price on its lending for that. These are very clear incentives for banks to hold green bonds, In Jiangsu, loans for green finance have their interest rates subsidised by 30 per cent, paid for by the central government. These experiments contributed to the huge green bond market seen in China today.

11:00 How Green Financing Enhances Company Reputation and Increases Equity Values of Issuing Companies
In a recent analysis of the 217 corporate green bonds issued by public companies globally from 2013 to 2017, companies that issued green bonds yields a positive stock market reaction, improvements in financial and environmental performance, an increase in green innovations, and an increase in stock ownership by long-term and green investors. When companies issue a green bond, it tends to get a lot of attention. Getting recognition for an innovative approach towards sustainability is another benefit for companies who issue them.
